Give me my dollar coins
I just learned that the US is about to start issuing dollar coins again.
I really hope this catches on this time around. I absolutely love using coins for singles and even up to probably around $5. When I was in Germany, I got really enamored with using coins for similar currency values.
The biggest technical obstacle would seem to be converting all of the vending machines to handle the new dollars. I remember hearing that the cost of that would be in the billions, if I remember correctly. If anybody knows where any cost estimates are located, I would love to link to it.
But, the real biggest issue is probably getting everybody to buy into the switch. Since we don’t regularly use dollar coins, it will be a pretty big emotional shift to make the switch. There probably is something to be said about using a coin for a larger denomination devaluing that denomination. The dollar will become the new quarter.
So, the George Washington dollar coin is set to launch February 15th. Do you plan to use them or avoid them? If somebody is making change for you when you buy a coffee and doughnuts and gives you the option of dollar bills or dollar coins, which will you pick?
I for one will take the coins. There is just something to the feel of them.
