Ever find your mind wandering toward telling your boss to shove it and finding a way to make money by working on your own. My advice to most people is to only do that after you have set up a plan on how you are actually going to make that money. That should prevent most people from trying.

Once you have your ducks in a row, though, I’m sure it is still pretty intimidating. I’ve managed to wander over to the dark side of consulting but only by doing it as a full time salaried consultant.

If you are ready to take the leap and just need that one gentle nudge to get you to march right into the boss’ office and tell him exactly what he can do with your job, you really need to go read this post of Steve Pavlina’s called 10 Reasons you should never get a job.

One thing he doesn’t really address, though, is managing your family’s health care once you leave the corporate cubicles. That’s a pretty big omission, so make sure you have a plan for that before you get yourself too fired up.

Even if you don’t make the leap to full time independence (don’t be ashamed, I haven’t either), the article is a really good pep talk for keeping motivated to keep working on learning how to do the things that might someday make the early exit possible.
